Red Rock Bible Camp has lots of faithful supporters. Many of them have been giving to the camp for years or even decades. However, some of the older generation of supporters have passed away. Others have retired and are now living on a fixed income which doesn’t allow them to support the camp at the same level they did in the past.
We need younger generations to step up and fill the gap. One way to give back is by participating in our Annual Red Rock Cyclathon as the four staff alumni pictured above did last year.
Another way is to donate to Red Rock Bible Camp. In his book, The Treasure Principle, Randy Alcorn says, “According to Jesus, storing up earthly treasures isn’t simply wrong. It’s just plain stupid.” He also says, “If we give instead of keep if we invest in the eternal instead of in the temporal, we store up treasures in heaven that will never stop paying dividends.”
In his book, Alcorn shares 6 Treasure Principles from scripture.
Treasure Principle Key #1: God Owns Everything.
The Psalmist writes in chapter twenty-four verse one that, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it”
You see, your stuff isn’t your stuff. It’s God’s stuff and He is letting you be His steward to take good care of it. However, as you will see in the next principle, He didn’t give it to you to just to keep it for yourself.
Treasure Principle Key #2: My (Your) heart always goes where I put God’s money.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
If you think God entrusted you with your stuff (including your money) for you to hoard, you are wrong. Alcorn shared the following illustration. “John D. Rockefeller was one of the wealthiest men who ever lived. After he died someone asked his accountant, “how much money did John D. leave?” The reply was classic: “he left…all of it.” Alcorn goes on to say, “If we give instead of keep, if we invest in the eternal instead of in the temporal, we store up treasures in heaven that will never stop paying dividends.”
Treasure Principle Key # 3: Heaven, not earth, is my home.
If you are a follower of Christ, this is true for you. Hebrews 11:16 “…they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”
For believers in Christ, this world is only our temporary home. God is preparing an eternal home for us that will far surpass any earthly home, so it is silly to get too attached to our home on earth. Hold on to your earthly stuff loosely.
Treasure Principle Key # 4: I should not live for the dot but for the line.
Alcorn explains the Dot and the Line this way, “Right now we’re living in the dot. But what are we living for? The shortsighted person lives for the dot. The person with perspective lives for the line.”
Treasure Principle Key #5: Giving is the only antidote to materialism.
Treasure Principle Key #6: God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of Giving.
I encourage you to buy a copy of Randy Alcorn’s book, The Treasure Principle. Read it. Study what Scripture says about how you should handle money and possessions consider giving back to the ministries from which you received.
