Staff Job Descriptions

Below is a list of Job Titles and their descriptions

Senior Counselor

Responsible to: Camp Manager
The focal point of camping at Red Rock is quality relationships between each of the counselors and their campers. Because counselors spend the majority of their time with their campers, they will have the opportunity to build the kind of relationship with each camper that is necessary to nurture them in their spiritual life. In pursuing this relationship, the counselors must devote time and energy to each camper and share their personal faith and commitment to Christ.

Responsibilities:

  • Embrace the objectives, traditions and policies of Red Rock.
  • Live with a small group of campers (7‑9) in a cabin and carry the full time responsibility for all activities and experiences of your group. You represent their mother and father while they are at camp and you should seek to accomplish the following for each camper:
    • Physical protection ‑ a safe, healthy, comfortable setting.
    • Social security ‑ “My counselor loves me.” “My cabin group includes me.”
    • Spiritual certainty ‑ “Jesus loves me so much He died for me. He has a purpose for my life.” “The Bible tells me about Jesus and His purpose for my life.”
    • A sense of self‑worth ‑ “My group needs me; I can contribute something to my group.”
  • Cultivate a personal relationship with each of your campers daily, not only to help them solve their problems, but also to guide them in self-discovery. Show an interest in the camper’s home, friends, hobbies and dreams. Discover the things your campers excel in and utilize their strengths. Be sensitive to the camper’s concerns, frustrations or weaknesses. Set specific and realistic goals for each camper in terms of his/her relationship to God and man, and work towards those goals while the camper is in your care. Be camper oriented. Give the camper top priority in your interests and involvements. Be fair minded and avoid discrimination. Ask God to love them through you.
  • Teach Discovery, encouraging Scripture memory and creating a setting for daily devotions. Create an attitude and atmosphere for prayer and encourage your campers to develop a meaningful and regular prayer life.
  • Take responsibility for the camper’s health, safety and belongings.
    • Clothing ‑ Campers are to unpack their clothing when they move into the cabin. Use shelves provided. Dirty clothing should be put into duffle bag or suitcase. See that campers dress for the weather conditions. Clothes (including underclothes) should be changed daily. See that campers do not sleep in their clothes or on bare mattresses. They should wear pyjamas and use a sheet or sleeping bag on mattress. No bathing suits under clothes! No wet clothing worn!
    • Hygiene – Younger campers will need to be reminded to take showers, wash their hands and brush their teeth.
  • Rest ‑ because they are outdoors and more active than usual, campers require more rest than at home. Be firm about the afternoon rest and the evening curfew! You must retire with your campers. Both counselors are to be present for evening devotions.
  • Medications and Health ‑ All medications must be given to the nurse. She will also administer medication to the campers. Report all symptoms of illness to the nurse immediately. Observe campers’ diet, eating habits and table manners.
  • Safety ‑ you should inform campers and ensure that they adhere to camp safety procedures, especially at the waterfront. Help keep grounds free of glass, nails, garbage and any other hazards. Discourage rough play that is likely to cause injury. Pillow fights can be a cause of serious injury and should be avoided or strictly controlled.
  • The Cabin ‑ Take full responsibility for your cabin, its equipment, furniture and immediate grounds. Furniture should not be rearranged. Cabin should be swept or vacuumed and tidied daily.
  • Red Rock offers a progressive skills program. Each counselor is asked to teach or assist in teaching a particular skill depending on their qualifications. Always be a participant either as instructor, assistant instructor or learner, depending on your level of skill and equipment and leadership available. As much as possible, upgrade your ability in the skills. Never leave your campers. Never be a spectator or a mere supervisor. Get involved! The skills program requires thousands of dollars of equipment. Always encourage the correct use of equipment and encourage a wholesome attitude towards the use of our natural physical environment.
  • Write an evaluation on each camper. The evaluation is to be written in ink on the form provided and turned in along with the camper registrations. Please keep in mind that these evaluations are used for follow up and for future counselors to know what has happened to the camper while at camp. Thought, care and prayer needs to be put into your evaluation.
  • Have the campers fill out questionnaires and then keep notes on the back of the questionnaire throughout the week. The notes should include observations which will help you in filling out the evaluations.
  • Please cooperate with the Camp Manager during and after the camp session in trying to accomplish our follow‑up goals and responsibilities.
  • We will try to arrange time off for you each day. This time is to be used for rest and meditation, a time of refreshing yourself emotionally, spiritually and physically so you can offer your best to your campers.
Junior Counselor

Responsible to: Camp Manager
The Junior Counselor is stage two of the Red Rock formal leadership development program (CIT is stage one). As the J.C. you are being trained to counsel or to assist in some other leadership role. The four qualities of leadership you should be diligently developing as J.C. are:

  • Knowledge – Learn the content of the total program Red Rock offers. Know the content of the various skills programs in all their stages and acquire as many of the skills as possible. Know the Staff Handbook thoroughly, absorb our philosophy of Christian education in a camping program and learn the basics of the Christian life and spiritual growth. Observe people and learn to understand them.
  • Skill – Camping is “doing”, so knowledge without skill and experience is of little value. Take every opportunity to develop and perfect your skills at camp. Experience comes by repetition; repetition gives new insight and understanding.
  • Ability to Teach – You may know something, but that does not mean you can teach it to others. Observe how the Sr. Counselors and instructors teach. Work out lesson plans (purpose, method, procedure, content, review, and follow up). Adjust your vocabulary and concepts to the age level you are teaching. Observe how children learn. Remember, to teach is much more than just to talk.
  • Understanding – A leader must make decisions all day. Right decisions are made by people who are self-disciplined, informed, experienced, unselfish, self-motivated, cooperative and filled with the Holy Spirit.

 Responsibilites:

  • Support Sr. Counselor in Cabin/Camper discipleship where necessary and requested.
  • Attend all staff meetings and other pertinent meetings as requested.
  • During all skills sessions, assist or teach as requested by the Camp Manager.
  • Assist Camp Manager with recreational programs and participate in evening chapel.
  • Assume Counselor’s duties as assigned by the Camp Manager.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as directed (i.e. assist waterfront staff during swimming, boating, canoeing, etc.).
  • Time off will be assigned by the Camp Manager.
Head Counselors

Responsible to: Camp Manager

Head Counselors carry a higher level of responsibility than Jr. and Sr. Counselors. Head Counselors are a part of the leadership team and will carry authority that should be respected. They are considered the go to person for Jr. and Sr. Counselors. A suitable Head Counselor will have wisdom, discernment and insight for the overall camp experience but specifically for good counselling practices. Head Counselors are there to encourage both the personal spiritual growth of the younger staff and their ‘professional’ growth (counselling skills, abilities and ministry leadership capabilities). Head Counselors are a part of the Program Staff.

  • Disciple and provide advice, guidance, counsel, teaching, and resources for the counselors (of their gender) each week of camp. Includes:
    • Helping with Evening Devotions if asked (preparing or leading)
    • Providing insight into camper relations and Morning Watch

    • Discuss goals with mentees and implement devotional plans if necessary.
  • Work alongside and in agreement with the other Head Counselor.
  • Give direction to the program staff in the absence or unavailability of the Camp Manager or Assistant Camp Manager.
  • Help build a level of maturity among the staff through leadership and example. This includes admonishing and correcting counselors when necessary (when rules are not adhered to, agreements broken, or discernment is not used).
  • Supervise counselors and younger staff when necessary (including the weekends).
  • Attend chapels, staff meetings, worship nights and firesides.
